He was named after Lance Rentzel who was a wide receiver in the American football team named Dallas Cowboys.

He has never met his biological father Edward Gunderson and neither has he ever expressed an interest in seeing him. His parents got divorced in 1973 when he was 2 years old. The following year, his mother married the wholesale salesman Terry Keith Armstrong, who adopted Lance that year.

Lance used to compete in triathlons until he joined the Motorola cycling team in 1992.
